Saint Mary's was established in 1912 and is a comprehensive Catholic institution affiliated with the De Lasalle Christian Brothers.

The university's home campus is located in Winona, MN and its focus is on the traditional, residential bachelor of arts program. The Minneapolis campus is focused on adult learners in undergraduate completion, graduate and doctoral programs, offering programs on ground, hybrid and online in Business and Technology, Education and Health and Human Services. The university has been educating K-12 teachers at the graduate level in Wisconsin since 1989 with a vast network of alumni.
